Are you wondering whether a blog really is important in your business?
When I first started my business, I was given the advice time and time again: blog.
Not only blog, but blog daily.
OK, these people are earning very good money, but I still like to do a bit of research myself.
Being a scientist, I wanted evidence as to what really was in a blog, and why do it?
What could a blog do for my business that a straight website couldn’t?
Why blog daily, and not twice a week, or just when I had something to say, or when I felt like it?
1. What is in a blog?
A blog is a website, a web log, which develops over time. Every time you post, you add another page to it.
In general, you can start a blog to inform, to entertain, or just to share your experiences of life. Many people find that it is a process which helps with their own discipline and self development. A lot of people like writing as a form of creativity, and don’t mind who, if anyone reads it. However, in business you do want people to read it!
2. What will it do for other people?
Your blog is an attraction mechanism.
In business, your blog is your point of information on the web. It will
- inform people of your existence
- give them information and strategies that will
- help them accomplish whatever they are trying to achieve in their business and
- help them accomplish whatever they are trying to achieve in their life
If you can use your content to build up a picture in other people’s minds of yourself, and your dreams and goals, and they start to like what you are saying, they will build a relationship with you.
And with that relationship comes trust.
And with that trust, they will opt in to follow you.
This is the best form of marketing, where you are attracting people to you who have a similar vision or share your values.
So if you are building a team, you will the be developing a group of like minded individuals.
And through your blog you can continue to give them good value content, and strengthen your connection.
3. What will it do for you on a personal level?
In starting up an online business, discipline and self development are a big part of your own journey:
- you will develop the discipline of having a routine, of sitting down and writing every day. Most entrepreneurs who I have spoken to, including, or especially, the top earners do just that. After some time you may be able to start writing posts in advance and scheduling them, but it is unlikely you will do that to start with. So you have a great commitment to yourself to get your business off the ground.
Developing your own thought processes. The majority of people who blog daily find that the thought processes involved in producing content helps them:
- clarify their own thoughts,
- keep them thinking about where their business is headed,
- keeps them developing new ideas,
- keeps them on top of their market and
- helps in their own personal development.
4. What does blogging do for your business?
To run a business you need leads.
Getting leads: If you need to physically interact with people on a day to day basis, then you need to continue this, day in, day out, whether it is by meetings, phone calls, or any other type of prospecting. And if you don’t do it, you don’t get leads.
If you have a blog, the leads will come. This is organic traffic. It comes from people accessing your blog, and your blog is there on the web 24 hours a day.
In general it takes from 50 to 100 posts before you start getting regular traffic and leads.
- blogging daily, it may take four or five months, before you start getting regular leads.
- that is why the consistency of posting is so important. The less often you post, the longer it takes to get that number of posts. As well as that, people who are following you are will get fed up looking for new content if it is less often.
- 82% of marketers who blog daily acquired customers via their blog, as opposed to
- 57% of marketers who blog monthly acquired a customer via their blog
Mind you, even that monthly figure is good!
5. What does blogging do for your business?
- essentially it is a permanent link to your product, without cost
- if you buy an e-mail list, or buy a list of opportunity seekers those e-mails are sent. And sit in an inbox. No one opens and old e-mail. But they will open an old blog.
- paid advertising: you pay for advertising to create the ability to spend more money. But once you stop paying, the advert is removed. A blog is not removed.
So, if you are wanting figures, what does this really mean for you?
Small businesses that blog get 126% more lead growth than small businesses that do not blog.
Companies that blog have 97% more inbound leads
Websites with blogs have 97% more indexed links.
So if you are really wanting to succeed in your business, it looks like all the advice I was getting was right.
Get leads. Build your business.
And because my big earning friends were right about that, I have taken their advice about which blogging platform to use.
