What is Valuable Content in a Blog or on Social Media?
How can a Facebook post, or a tweet, or an instagram post provide value?
When I started out online, I had no idea what that meant.
Having had no social media accounts, I had read many blogs, and enjoyed the stuff I read.
I followed a lot of people,
but I never realised that this meant they were technically producing valuable content.
So when it cam to me producing blogs and posting, I had to think hard about what I was doing.
So what is valuable content?
The thing that you cannot get away from is knowing your target audience.
Once you know exactly who you are aiming at, who you are trying to attract, then you are half way there.
So, are you wanting to talk to
- stay at home mums
- stay at home dads!
- early retirees
- bored professionals
- itchy-feet travellers
- gap year students
- motor bike enthusiasts
- fitness fanatics
- home bakers
- florists etc etc etc…
This list is absolutely endless, and is based entirely upon your passion, and who you want to help.
( I gave you a big list, to get you thinking.)
Once you have that worked out, you can then be producing content that will be valuable to them.
Because then you will know their age, their sex, their hopes and dreams, thei fears and their pain points.
You need to know them in glorious technicolour, inside and out.
You will know what their biggest desire is in life.
And you will then tell them things that will
- relieve their fears,
- satisfy their needs and
- give them hope that their dreams are attainable.
So you will be
- answering questions they may have
- giving direction and
- providing resources
Content is in the form of:
- videos: Facebook, You Tube and Periscope
- blogs: written content
- Social media posts of text
- Social media posts of images
- emails to your email list that you are collecting.
So e.g. For people who want to travel, they would be interested
- places they would want to go
- places for them to stay
- foods to try in various countries
- foods to avoid
- places to avoid
- must see sights
- health advice
- safety advice for different countries
- books they may want to read
- language problems etc etc….
You can talk about your own experiences, stories from other travellers,
refer them to other websites which have good articles.
Pictures depict the dream of the destination: stunning scenery, wild activities, exotic bazaars, food…
all the things that you love seeing when you are travelling.
The list again is endless.
And the things that you can talk about in your posts or show in your images are also endless.
My own target audience is
- a person who want to make an income online, but
- don’t quite know how to do it,
- may be struggling in a network marketing company,
- may be worried about being scammed,
- are not sure their passion is enough,
- and have the wish but not the full belief in themselves.
So my content is focused on
- online marketing tips and strategies,
- relevant resources and courses,
- personal development, motivation and inspiration.
And the content that I know that my audience find helpful is
- what to sell related to their passion
- how to sell it
- what marketing strategies to use
- how to survive ‘not being techy’
- how to get leads
- how to get sales
- how to have the business person’s mindset
They will not be interested in recipes to make their own bread, in dog grooming tips,
or in the best way to travel through China.
So make your content specific.
And make it interesting. If you are bored writing it or reading it, or don’t like your images yourself,
you cannot expect your audience to get excited by them
The best thing to do is write a list of the problems that your audience has.
Imagine it as one person, asking you a question, and you are speaking directly to them.
Know yourself, and how you are putting yourself over to them.
Go ahead and write down at least five words that describe how you are.
Those are the word behind every post you make.
You have to be genuine. It will shine through.
Then every post you make think:
- Is this responding to a problem or thought that my target person has? and
- Am I presenting myself as my genuine self?
You want to:
while solving their problems
Put those things together,
and THAT is the valuable content that people will want to
Don’t worry that others may have talked about the same subjects too.
They are not you.
There is only the one you, telling things in your way.
And that is where the value comes in.
What is valuable content?
Wherever you post it, blogs or social media:
Giving the people you are talking to helpful, informative, inspiring information,
that answers the things that they worry about
and the questions they have,
in the way that only you can do.
People who like your voice will find you and stick with you.
